Split Turning

Having not done much in the way of split turning I decided to give a couple of items a go. The ones I usually get are not on purpose and end up at opposite ends of the workshop.

This one, is an idea developed by David Springett. It's like origami with wood. Precision is a must. Diameters & and lengths are measured with a vernier caliper. The results I think are worth it with shapes that provoke intrigue and puzzlement.

Split turnings are achieved by cutting your blank down the center then gluing them back together with thin cardboard or paper between the halves. Turning to the desired shape and in this case rotating the two pieces 90 degrees then re gluing.

Recovery of a Bowl Gone Wrong

My latest creation.

This started as a bowl with a good finish and nice grain. But alas the shape was a flop. The rim was way too big for the body of the bowl. On the lathe it looked fine, but right way up on the table, yuk.

Too much time invested to cast aside as fire wood I set about carving the holes to break up the oversized rim. I drilled the bulk out with a forstner bit then trimmed up with the dremel. The inside of the carving was blackened with acrylic paint. Then a couple of coats of satin Minwax over the whole job.
Now with the effect of the overpowering rim gone I could feel happy with the end result.

So next time you have a design blunder think outside the box. Simple modifications can make a huge difference.
Pity I don't have a before shot to show the change.
